The new patients are understood to have contracted the virus in Italy and Tenerife, England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty said. More than 400 people have been infected with the virus in Italy and 12 people have died. It is now considered the epicentre of the virus in Europe. In Tenerife, 168 Britons have been told to isolate themselves at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace after four people who stayed there from Italy were confirmed to have caught coronavirus. People staying there have reported confusion among guests over whether they should be staying in their rooms with some still wandering around the hotel and using its pool. The two new people confirmed to have coronavirus in England have now been transferred to specialist NHS infection centres at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital in London for treatment, Prof Whitty said.

He added: ‘Two further patients in England have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of UK cases to 15. ‘The virus was passed on in Italy and Tenerife and the patients have been transferred to specialist NHS infection centres in Royal Liverpool Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital, London.’ Earlier today, a primary school shut after a parent was confirmed to have the deadly virus. Burbage Primary School in Buxton, Derbyshire, announced the decision to close its gates late on Wednesday evening in a WhatsApp message.

It is thought to be the first school closure in Britain linked to a confirmed case of coronavirus. Several others have sent pupils home who had visited regions in northern Italy that are now on lockdown due to the disease. Burbage Primary head teacher Anthony Tierney was on site early this morning to deal with concerned parents and confirmed the school would remain closed today ‘as a precaution’.
